Starting with Brother and Sister Portraits

Here are the two, both dressed and matching in blue, brother and sister hanging out. How cute are these family photos?!

The brother started playing the guitar. We love it when our families bring props for a photo session, since it adds personality and flair to it. The guitar is something specific to their family.

And now the whole family

We started capturing the whole family after easing in with the brother-sister family photos.

How beautiful is this background for a family photo in Orange County.

We found a rocky creek bed or stream bed for another backdrop for our portraits.

Family Photos in Front of a Tunnel

We then got more family photos in front of a tunnel in Irvine.

Above is an article about Irvine family photography in Orange County. This family chose blue as their color theme for the portrait session. They even had a guitar as a prop. This shows Jeffrey Open Trail Park in Irvine, with family photos in a field, with trees, in a stream bed, and in front of a tunnel along the biking and hiking trails.

We started with some quick photo portraits of the 1yo boy along a dirt path.

Then we took some first birthday photos of the little guy. Here is the wooden crate and a banner saying “I’m one.”

Then we added more to the cake smash setup, arranging it with some balloons (with a blue-green palette), large letters spelling ONE, and the soon to be smashed cake. They went with a giant cupcake (using a giant cupcake mold) with blue frosting.

And Let the Cake Smash Commence!!

How adorable is this little boy with the big ole cake?!

I think this next photo has to be one of the cutest cake smash photos we have seen. It went viral on Pinterest when we posted it there.

And here’s a closeup of him stuffing his face with cake.

And look at that smile!

Cake smash photography is something that we’ve noticed becoming more popular as a one year old birthday tradition. The combination of sweet frosting, a curious little now toddler, and an open space that we can get dirty leads to cute and adorable first birthday photos. Judy is great at capturing this fun moment and we have even done the same with both of our own children on their first birthdays. We started with their two children together, who were matching with blue tones. The two of them are so cute and the photos show just that.

Family Photos on a Trail

We hopped onto a trail to get more family photos on the main hiking and biking trail going around the lake at Bonelli Park.

And even more cute family photography of the brother and sister.

Family Photography with Leaves and Trees

After the trail, we wandered over to a large tree with a log and leaves all over (one of the nice things about shooting in the fall are the leaves).

And just look at the size of this huge tree!

And it’s always fun having the whole family toss fall leaves up in the air.

This is a family photography session in San Dimas at Bonelli Park. Family photos here can use the lake (Puddingstone Reservoir, or San Dimas Lake), the many hiking trails, and the abundant greenery and natural backgrounds. San Dimas is on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County, bordered by Covina, La Verne, Glendora, Pomona, and Claremont. We also did some 1yo birthday photos in a basket.

And on to the Indoor Cake Smash Photos!

Mom made a very large cupcake, with tons of blue frosting. Ready for some indoor cake smash photos!

And OOPS!!!! the cake fell off the cake stand for a very cute moment. Very cute moment for indoor cake smash photos!

Doing a cake smash is very messy and easier to do outdoors. If you have to do it indoors, a hardwood floor works pretty well (unless your child likes to throw cake!). Doing cake smash photos is a popular way to announce a 1yo birthday party, using it for cards or online invites. It’s also a cute way to memorialize a moment in time, where our little ones are young enough for a cake smash to be innocent, but old enough to tear apart a cake!

Starting on the Streets of Downtown Los Angeles

We started on the street level on Grand Ave. outside of the Walt Disney Concert Hall (WDCH) in downtown Los Angeles. Their choice of blue tones and colors matches well with the silver, gray, and blue tones of the WDCH area.

We then walked up to the garden level for more family photos. The garden level offers exactly that; a modern garden that’s a mixture of well-groomed green trees with silver, metallic curves of metal and concrete.

We then walked up even higher to the highest level on top of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, which is nicely more remote and quiet. Judy used this as a chance to get cute family portraits of the two daughters together, along with individual portraits of each daughter by themselves.

Judy took this family photo from directly overhead, which is a very unique perspective for a family portrait. Modern. Urban.

And here is where we can see Grand Ave. in the background as the curves of the Concert Hall frame our lovely family.

Department of Water and Power (DWP) Family Photos

After the Walt Disney Concert Hall, we walked over to the Department of Water and Power (DWP) building for more family photos with the downtown skyline. What a view!

This is a great example of Walt Disney Concert Hall family photos in downtown Los Angeles. Our lovely family wore blue tones for their color motif, which matched nicely with the metallic tones of the concert hall. They have two beautiful daughters, which makes us think of our own two daughters!

Starting with Family Photos at Bonelli Park

We started the family photos in a little hidden spot with greenery and flowers, easing the two older daughters into the family portrait session.

And it’s always nice getting a family photo of just the two parents together!

Walking along a trail in San Dimas

We then had the whole family walk along a popular hiking and biking trail that runs alongside the waters of the lake (the Puddingstone Reservoir). Our family chose blue and yellow for their color palette, which is awesome since we are a Bruin family hehehehe.

We always love getting family photos of daddy with daughters, and they sure outnumber him!

How cute are these three sisters together?

We always love kids swinging in the air, and this little one sure got lots of air! How cute is that priceless expression on her face?

Family Photography San Dimas

This is a great examples of family photography in San Dimas, at Bonelli Park and Puddingstone Reservoir. They have three daughters, and those little sisters are adorable in family photos together. San Dimas is a city on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. Our family chose yellow and blue color tones for their clothing.

Starting on a Blue Wall on the Santa Monica Pier

We eased the family into the portrait session using a well-shaded wooden blue wall on the pier.

And we got individual portraits of each kid while we were at it.

We then walked down to the sands of Santa Monica Beach, which is a great opportunity to get the kids to stretch out their legs and run!

But some not as well as others…

And we absolutely love the way the Santa Monica Pier looks in the background of these family photos! It fills the frame well and is distinctly Santa Monica.

The Santa Monica Beach Boardwalk

After that we walked down the wooden boardwalk, with the sun starting to set in the background. The solar flares looked awesome.

And then they flipped the youngest son upside down and started tickling him!

The Monkey Bars and Swings on Santa Monica Beach

There are public monkey bars and other playground/gym equipment right there on the boardwalk, so we used them for some fun family photos.

And yeah that little boy can climb!

Sunset Family Photos on the Beach

We then went over to the other side of the Santa Monica Pier for sunset family photos.

And a wave came up and surprised them while we were taking pictures.

This is a great example of Santa Monica family photos at the infamous Santa Monica Pier and Beach. We took family portraits on the pier, along the wooden boardwalk, the Santa Monica Beach gym equipment (monkey bars, rope climb, and swings), and then got the sunset along the waterline. This is a family with three children (one girl and two boys), wearing white with pastel tones. The historic Santa Monica Pier was in the background of many of the family photos, giving the pictures a very distinct southern California look and feel.

This is the Orange County family photography portrait session of the {R} family in Irvine, shot at Jeffrey Open Space Trail and Park. Orange County is home to many local parks and is a popular place for family photos. Jeffrey Open Space Trail is a perfect spot for their family photography session, featuring open grass fields, lovely trees, and a small creek bed with rocks. They have two daughters, which is what personally have too. We have spent a good deal of time tagging all of our articles on this blog, so you can find many examples of different portraits sessions. Starting the Family Photos with the Two Daughters

We started the portrait session with the two little daughters. Aren’t they adorable!? It reminds me of our own two daughters.

The we brought in the parents for pictures of the whole family.

We love the wooden fences at this park in San Dimas. They really add a nice accent to all of the images.

Judy then did individual family portraits of each girl.

Judy then took the time to just get family portraits of the parents together, which of course is something we do all the time at weddings. It’s nice to see that spark that started a family in the first place.
